Downtown Franklin Theatre

Downtown Franklin Theatre

The legendary Franklin Theatre just outside Cool Springs, which re-opens June 3, announced that critically acclaimed Studio Tenn will be the resident live theatre company, presenting classic plays and musicals as part of the new mission to offer the highest quality live entertainment in Middle Tennessee.

Additionally, the Franklin Theatre and Studio Tenn unveiled the 2011-2012 season:

August 18-28 — “Guys and Dolls”
Featuring a score by Frank Loesser, the classic musical tells the story of a group of small-time gamblers and the ladies in their lives.

December 8-18 — “A Christmas Carol”
The retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic novel takes a miser on a journey of self-redemption, and coincides with Franklin’s annual Dickens of a Christmas festival.

February 23-March 4 — “The Miracle Worker”
William Gibson’s three-act play tells the inspirational story of Anne Sullivan’s struggle to teach the blind and deaf Helen Keller how to communicate.

The historic Franklin Theatre, built in 1937, re-opens to the public on Friday, June 3, after undergoing a multi-million-dollar restoration. As part of the restoration, the theater installed a world-class sound and lighting system to accommodate live entertainment, including concerts and plays.

“The Franklin Theatre is one of the last surviving movie houses in the South,” said Mary Pearce, Executive Director of the Heritage Foundation of Franklin & Williamson County, which owns the theater and led its restoration. “Now, we’re proud to offer movies, music and more — including world-class live theatre.”

Pearce added: “Studio Tenn has earned a great reputation in a very short period of time. We’re proud to call them partners.”

Studio Tenn was founded in 2009 by nationally known director and artist Matt Logan, Emmy Award-winning producer Philip Hall, and Broadway and film actress Marguerite Lowell Hall. The company’s mission is simple: “Use a rich combination of talent from Nashville and Broadway to bring classic works of drama and musical theatre to life in Middle Tennessee, and provide innovative educational programs designed to entertain, educate and inspire rising artists.”

Jake Speck, who played one of the lead roles in the Broadway production of “Jersey Boys,” serves as Studio Tenn’s managing director. “Studio Tenn’s goal is to bring New York-caliber theatre to Middle Tennessee in a way that is ‘uniquely Tennessean,’” Speck said. “The history and vision of the Franklin Theatre brings an exciting new dimension to our work.”

He added: “We are delighted to partner with an organization that shares our passion for high-quality and exceptional entertainment.”

Tickets for the 2011-12 season are now available online, at 20% off the regular ticket price through July 1. To purchase tickets, check out www.franklintheatre.com. Or for more information, go to www.studiotenn.com.

Downtown Franklin Theatre

The Next Generation of the Heritage Foundation, comprised of 21-40 year old Heritage Foundation members, has made a $100,000 pledge to fund the replica of the original 1937 Franklin Theatre Marquee.

In honor of this special occasion, the Next Generation Heritage Foundation is sponsoring a “Champagne and Shopping Hour” beginning at 4 p.m. in many of the shops on Main Street. Participating shops include Avec Moi, Bathos, Bob Parks Realty, Bink’s Outfitters, Dion’s, Franklin Tea, The Heirloom Shop, Serendipity Skincare, VueOptique, Whats-In-Store, Yarrow Acres, and many more!

At 5 p.m., the ceremony will begin on the street in front of the Theatre.  Main Street will be closed for the event beginning at 4 p.m., and parking will be available in Downtown Franklin’s two free parking lots located at 2nd Avenue South and 4th Avenue South.  Don’t miss this moment in Franklin history!

The Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and preserve the architectural, geographic and cultural heritage of Franklin and Williamson County and to promote the ongoing economic revitalization of downtown Franklin in the context of historic preservation.  The organization purchased the Franklin Theatre in 2007 in order to restore and preserve it and will show movies, host live performances and events.  The Franklin Theatre is expected to open in late spring 2011.

New Franklin Theatre Director

Franklin TN

Near Cool Springs, The Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County, TN announced on Friday the choice of Steven J. Greil, a real estate agent with Zeitlin and Co., Realtors and also one of Tennessee’s most well known arts executives and events producers, as the new managing director of the historic Franklin Theatre.

Greil, former head of the TPAC (Tennessee Performing Arts Center), The Nashville Symphony, and a 15-year veteran of the music industry, will over see the Franklin Theatre’s restoration, lead the Main Street landmark into its start-up phase, and then manage day-to-day operations. Following the restoration, the theater is to operate as a 350-seat film, music and event venue, and anchor downtown Franklin’s ongoing revitalization.

“Steven’s integrity, his management experience in the arts, and his passion for film, music and live entertainment, make him the perfect fit for this job,” said David Garrett, president of the Heritage Foundation. “We’re pleased that he’s going to lead the re-emergence of the Franklin Theatre, and we’re grateful for the community’s continued trust and confidence in this exciting project.”

Historic Downtown Franklin TN

Greil’s selection caps a multi-month executive search led by the Heritage Foundation and the Center for Nonprofit Management. The foundation’s board of directors unanimously chose Greil based on his long track record leading high-profile arts and entertainment venues, building community support, and overseeing complex capital-renovation projects.

Greil served as president and CEO of TPAC from 1994 to 2005. Prior to leading TPAC, he was executive director of the Nashville Symphony Association.  More recently, Greil worked as a marketing and event-management consultant and was one of the producers of August Wilson’s final play, Radio Golf, on Broadway in New York.  He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University.

“I am excited to join the team at The Heritage Foundation in bringing back the historic Franklin Theatre,” Greil said.  “Going back to its historic name signifies that we will be much more than a cinema.  I believe the Franklin Theatre will be ‘the hub’ of the arts in Williamson County. “Middle Tennessee is blessed with a fantastic arts community.  We hope we will become ‘the little sister’ to the major arts institutions in Nashville like TPAC, The Nashville Symphony, Nashville Ballet, Nashville Opera, the Tennessee Repertory Theatre, and the many other excellent theater companies and performing arts groups.”

Greil said he is excited about the Heritage Foundation’s commitment to install premium sound, lighting and projection systems in the renovated facility.

“All of the artists and musicians that make Middle Tennessee and Williamson County their homes are going to be able to play with ‘the best and the newest toys’ of their craft at the Franklin Theatre,” Greil said.

The Franklin Theatre opened in 1937 and enjoyed a continuous run as Main Street’s movie theater until rising property values forced a significant rent increase in 2007. Also, the building had deteriorated and needed a complete restoration. The Heritage Foundation embarked on a major fundraising campaign lead by Emily Magid, Cal Turner and the Martin Foundation and raised more than $6 million to purchase and renovate the two buildings. Construction work is well underway with a projected opening date in spring 2011. Greil will be working in the Heritage Foundation’s offices at the Five Points Post Office until the Franklin Theatre construction is complete.

“I look forward to working and playing with a whole new group of arts patrons and community minded citizens,” Greil said. “The citizens of Franklin and Williamson County have already demonstrated their commitment to historic preservation and to downtown vitality.  The Franklin Theatre will bring the lights back on Main Street and become a new cultural destination for all of middle Tennessee, and hopefully the World.”

The Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County is a 43-year-old nonprofit association with the mission to protect and preserve the architectural, geographic and cultural resources of Franklin and Williamson County and continue the revitalization of downtown Franklin in the context of historic preservation.
