Girls Gone Wild Bus in Cool Springs

Girls Gone Wild in Franklin, TN

Girls Gone Wild in Franklin, TN

Hide the women and children!

Seriously.

The notorious “Girls Gone Wild” party bus was spotted in Franklin, TN near Bonefish Grill at the intersection of Mallory Lane and Cool Springs Blvd.  The not very subtly marked bus was towing a black Dodge minvan with California plates and turning onto Cool Springs Blvd towards 65.

CoolSprings.com called the corporate office for the Girls Gone Wild franchise but they were not unavailable for comment.

Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild recently made news for filing a lawsuit against Las Vegas casino magnate Steve Wynn.  Francis is accusing Wynn of lying to Las Vegas officials about Francis for skipping out on a $2.5 million gambling dept in order to get the D.A. to press criminal charges against Francis.

The Event Booking section of the Girls Gone Wild website states:

The Girls Gone Wild buses travel around the country looking for the craziest pubs, hottest parties, and the wildest girls around. We will bring our bus and cameramen and turn your bar, club, or special event into a Girls Gone Wild party! Contact us today for more information.

Were they stopping for gas or in Franklin for an event?  We’ll know for sure if the “Girls Gone Wild in Historic Downtown Franklin” DVD is ever released.

We spoke with a local attorney who had some free advice for Joe Francis and the Girls Gone Wild bus in regards to Williamson County:

Keep passing through.

Study Finds No Heart Risk In ADHD Medications

Dr. William Cooper

Dr. William Cooper

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) medications do not increase the risk for heart disease or heart attack in children and young adults, according to a Vanderbilt study of 1.2 million patients taking drugs including Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta and Strattera between 1998 and 2005.

The study, published online today by the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and authored by William Cooper, M.D., MPH, a Vanderbilt Professor of Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine, is the largest ever to examine potential risks posed by drugs to treat ADHD.

“It should be reassuring that we found no evidence that these drugs increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events on a population basis,” Dr. William Cooper from Vanderbilt said.

“However, each child is unique, so families and providers need to work together to make informed decisions about the best options for their children. This is especially true for children who have any chronic health conditions or special health needs.”

ADHD, the most common neurobehavioral disorder in childhood, is characterized by inattention, overactivity and impulsivity.  Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta and Strattera are commonly prescribed to help manage ADHD.

Cooper and colleagues reviewed medical records from four health plans for more than 1.2 million children and young adults ages 2-24. Data collected from 1998-2005 were examined for serious cardiovascular events including sudden cardiac death, heart attack and stroke.

Current users of ADHD medications (such as Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta and Strattera) and their health records were compared with individuals who were not using ADHD medications.

Over the seven-year period, 81 cases of serious heart problems, or about three cases per 100,000, were documented. There was no significant increase in risk of these events for patients who used ADHD medications compared with those who did not, Cooper said.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a black-box advisory in 2006, linking ADHD medications and potential heart risk. Then, in 2008, the American Heart Association (AHA) reviewed existing research and concluded it was reasonable for physicians to obtain an electrocardiogram (EKG) before prescribing ADHD medications.

“We hope that the study will provide evidence to guide future recommendations for whether children without a history of heart problems should be tested before starting ADHD medications,” Dr. WIlliam Cooper at Vanderbilt said.

The study was supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Effective Health Care program and the FDA.

Vanderbilt University Doubles World Record for Vaccinations

Today, Vanderbilt University more than doubled the current world record for the total number of vaccinations given in an eight-hour period. From 6:50 a.m. until 2:50 p.m., 12,647 University and Medical Center faculty, staff and students received free influenza vaccinations at Flulapalooza, a mass vaccination drill and simultaneous attempt to break the current Guinness World Record.

Organizers of the event, who won’t know until paperwork is submitted whether Vanderbilt will be officially awarded the world record by Guinness, said the turnout exceeded expectations. The current world record stands at 6,215 and is held by Kaiser Permanente. Flulapalooza had surpassed 6,300 vaccinations within the drill’s first four hours.

About 14,000 prefilled syringes were on hand for the event, and more than 300 volunteers assisted keeping participants moving quickly and smoothly through the tent on the grassy lawn between Vanderbilt’s Light Hall and the Nashville VA Medical Center Campus.

“In addition to testing the mass vaccination plan, we wanted to generate some excitement, some buzz, and some of that peer-to-peer encouragement. It’s part of a strategic effort to increase our vaccination effort,” said Dr. Melanie Swift, M.D., medical director of Vanderbilt’s Occupational Health Clinic.

Forty-four nurses at individual stations worked simultaneously in the Flulapalooza tent, with 20 staff working to check people out after their shots.

The team coordinating the exercise met with a University of Louisville representative earlier this year, where a similar event was held in 2009, to plan the safest and most efficient way to move four lines through the tent.

“We’ve been planning this event for about two years, with about four months of intense planning,” Dr. Melanie Swift said. “There have been so many people involved in planning Flulapalooza, from feeding our volunteers, to giving the shots, to making sure the lines move quickly. The flu vaccine is one way to give yourself the best possible chance of being protected from the flu, and it’s imporant for Vanderbilt to test its emergency preparedness plan.”

The 2011-2012 flu vaccine will protect against the three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during this flu season. This includes an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus and an influenza B virus.

Eva Lee, Ph.D., a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention principal investigator on large-scale dispensing and emergency response, was on hand at Flulapalooza.

“This is an excellent model for a closed point-of-dispensing. We want private businesses and public institutions to adopt such on-site vaccination strategies. This is critical to our emergency response infrastructure,” Lee said.

Flu vaccinations are still available for Vanderbilt faculty, staff and students who were not able to participate in Flulapalooza. Vaccinations are free for all faculty and staff.

“We want to thank all of the faculty, staff and students who staffed the event, as well as those who participated by getting vaccinated,” said Pam Hoffner, RN, MSN, director of Emergency Preparedness and Response for Vanderbilt and the event’s incident commander. “The Vanderbilt community exceeded our expectations and made us proud to work at Vanderbilt.”

Herman Cain Cool Springs Book Signing

Herman Cain

Herman Cain

Republican presidential candidate  Hermain Cain will be signing copies of his book “This is Herman Cain! My Journey to the White House” today at noon inside the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Cool Springs.

A graduate of Purdue, Herman Cain is the former President and CEO of Godfather’s Pizza.  He is also the former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and CEO of the National Restaurant Association, a trade organization and lobby group for the restaurant industry.

This event at Barnes & Noble in Cool Springs is intended to be a book signing only and instructions given have indicated there will be no personalizations, no posed photography and no memorabilia or campaign materials.

We’re guessing this will be a more subdued book signing in comparison to Sarah Palin’s Costco visit in Cool Springs last November!

Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital Teen Driving Safety Program

This week is National Teen Driver Safety Week, and Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is taking steps to prevent teen motor vehicle accidents.

Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital is partnering with area high schools around Cool Springs to launch a unique, student-run campaign to combat texting while driving and other driver distractions.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle accidents remain the leading cause of death among U.S. teenagers, and distracted driving as a whole is on the rise. In 2009, more than 5,400 people died in crashes that involved a distracted driver. Teen drivers are especially at risk, since they are four times more likely than older drivers to have an accident.

With support from Ford Motor Vehicle Company, the Pediatric Trauma Injury Prevention Program at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital invited 32 students from nearby Station Camp High School and East Robertson County High School to participate in an interactive motor vehicle safety program, “Be in The Zone.”

During their visit, doctors, nurses and safety experts demonstrated the realistic chain of events that often occurs after a motor vehicle accident, explaining to students the physical, emotional and social consequences of distracted driving in Cool Springs.

The students, with the help of Children’s Hospital, are now charged with developing and executing multi-faceted, anti-texting-while-driving campaigns at their schools and in their communities.

The pilot program is research-based, and is led by the students under the guidance of the Injury Prevention Program coordinator and student interns in the Injury Prevention Program. For more information on the program, please contact Purnima Unni, Injury Prevention coordinator at Children’s Hospital, at (615) 936-8222, or email purnima.unni@vanderbilt.edu.

‘Concierge’ program saves families time and money; home delivery and gift wrapping free with many purchases

The Score of Cool Springs, video game retail and entertainment company based in Franklin, rolled out it’s “Holiday Concierge Program” this week as families prepare for a busy holiday season.  The program is simple: The Score takes the list of video games and merchandise families need to purchase for the holidays, and has everything ready to pick up on a specified date and time in December.  The program is designed to eliminate the frustrations and headache of hunting down popular games by reducing holiday video game purchases down to a single transaction.

“Customers come into The Score, where we can help them find just the right games they and their families will enjoy,” says Score founder Bradley Metrock.  ”We then take a deposit against the list of merchandise they are looking to purchase, and have it ready for them when they need it.  Combine the convenience of this program with The Score’s everyday better prices and value, and you have a powerful new tool for parents needing to purchase video games this holiday.”

Gift-wrapping, home delivery, and even shipping within the continental United States are inexpensive – or free if the overall purchase amount exceeds $300.

“This program has typically been unavailable to the general public,” commented Metrock.  ”We’ve only had it available for a few days already and we’ve seen tremendous interest already.”
