Lipscomb Opening Campus in Cool Springs

Lipscomb in Cool Springs

Lipscomb University will launch its first satellite campus in early 2012 as it opens a new facility in the Cool Springs area of Williamson County. University officials recently finalized a lease on a nearly 5,000-square-foot facility located at Cool Springs Boulevard and Aspen Grove Drive in the Thoroughbred Village III Professional Plaza.

The facility, which will be called “Spark,” is being designed to create an environment for innovative ideas in learning, business, faith and the community. A technology-rich facility, Spark will offer flexible space and innovative delivery systems for Lipscomb graduate, adult learning and certificate students as well as for corporations and community organizations in the area who are looking for a meeting venue that encourages fresh thinking.

“Spark represents the next generation of growth for the university as well as progressive thinking about education space. Spark is part of the university’s larger strategy to take innovative education and professional development opportunities to prospective participants in surrounding areas, offering them access to Lipscomb’s mission and purpose without them having to be physically located on our Nashville campus in Green Hills,” said Lipscomb President L. Randolph Lowry. “It will enable Lipscomb to expand its academic programming and offer a convenient option that echoes the programming on the Nashville campus to residents and businesses in the Williamson County area as well. This site allows us to promote and grow our existing programs into a new market and provide a much-needed service to this region.”

Last year, the College of Education began offering graduate education classes at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro and at Battle Ground Academy in Franklin and has tripled enrollment in those cohorts in just two years. The SPARK facility will be the first university-operated satellite campus.

Spark will be led by John Lowry, assistant professor of business at Lipscomb University, who will manage the day-to-day operations of the facility. Lowry, who helped establish Lipscomb’s recent programs in executive education, corporate training and an MBA fellowship program, will also continue to work on special projects for Lipscomb’s College of Business.

“Our research has found that the demographics of Williamson County and the surrounding area make it one of the best counties in the country to offer graduate education. Fifty-two percent of people living in the vicinity of Spark have college degrees and tend to be younger and more affluent than average. Williamson County leaders are excited about Lipscomb University being a part of their community and partnering with us as we seek to serve its residents just as we have the Nashville community. This facility also benefits from the university’s experience in hosting numerous successful community and corporate events on Lipscomb’s main campus as it brings this new and innovative meeting space to Williamson County,” said John Lowry.

Williamson County leadership said they look forward to Lipscomb University’s presence in the county.

“Lipscomb’s presence here brings more opportunities for Williamson County residents to pursue higher education and all of the benefits that goes with it. Having more higher educational opportunities in the county along with an extremely strong public school system makes this an even more attractive place for families and businesses to move,” said Rogers Anderson, county mayor for Williamson County.

“This non-traditional, state-of-the-art campus in the heart of the Cool Springs business community will offer flexibility and convenience for those who need to pursue a degree program around a work schedule as well as an environment that will spark creative thinking for community and corporate groups using the facility. This is yet another example of how Lipscomb University is creating opportunities to serve the community,” said Cindi Parmenter, president of the Brentwood Cool Springs Chamber of Commerce.

The academic programming to be offered at Spark includes degree work from several colleges and institutes at the university. Most of those classes will take place in the evenings and on weekends. When the space is not being used for academics—primarily during the daytime—it will be open to businesses and organizations looking for off-site options for meetings and other events. Construction on Spark will begin in the next few weeks with anticipated completion in the spring.

Lipscomb’s new facility will be a multi-purpose space providing the physical capability to accommodate various learning needs. It will consist of three learning spaces, each accommodating 24 to 36 participants depending on group size needed. Walls may also be reconfigured to create one large space. The result is a flexible space for event and academic activities that can quickly accommodate a need as small as one-on-one meetings or as large as a 125-person lecture. Additional spaces include a catering kitchen, a workspace area, a video conferencing room and two conference rooms along with a pre-function entry space that can be branded to participant use and is designed to hospitably welcome students, professionals and visitors.

“Dancing With An iPod in Public” Rally at Cool Springs Galleria

A rally is being held on Sunday, December 18th from 2-3pm in Center Court at the Cool Springs Galleria in an effort to get Preston Leatherman on the Ellen show.

By now you may have seen Preston Leatherman’s “Dancing With an iPod in Public”, filmed recently at both the Cool Springs Galleria and The Mall at Green Hills. The video was filmed throughout stores and in mall common areas at the two Nashville area shopping malls. Although “Dancing With an iPod in Public” has received a good amount of national press, it has yet to reach 1 million views since being uploaded to YouTube almost 3 weeks ago. While amazing and heartwarming, relative to the world of viral videos it still has a ways to go until reaching Double Rainbow fame. Preston needs our help to increase the YouTube views so join us from 2-3pm on Sunday!

The Cool Springs Galleria is Tennessee’s largest mall and located in Cool Springs Franklin, the heart of Williamson County.

Otter’s Chicken Tenders in Cool Springs Closes

Otter’s Chicken Tenders has announced the closing of their Cool Springs location. This news comes just over a year after closing the Otter’s Chicken Tenders in East Nashville’s 5th and Main condo project.

Last day of business for the Cool Springs restaurant is Sunday, December 18th.

Otter’s Chicken Tenders

There are now two remaining Otter’s Chicken Tenders in the Nashville area, one at 1528 Demonbreun in Nashville and the other at 1970 Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro. Their website shows another location in Marietta, GA.

Hard to say why the Otter’s Chicken Tenders in Cool Springs closed. The number of competitors has increased with all the recently opened restaurants in Cool Springs. Possibly the landlord thought the considerably higher lease rates for retail space around the new Whole Foods down the street justified an increased lease rate for the retail space occupied by Otter’s Chicken Tenders? They shouldn’t. There is big difference in being located adjacent to the new Whole Foods McEwen versus an unanchored retail center with poor visibility and dancers out front wearing gold pants while holding “We Buy Gold” signs almost everyday.

At least Otter’s Chicken Tenders was able to ride it out until their lease expired.

One other thing, everyone should have a lot of respect for Otter’s announcing their last day, before their actual last day.

It rarely ever happens.

Vanderbilt Study on Birth Defects Find no Higher Risk in Offspring of Childhood Cancer Survivors

Vanderbilt Study Finds Offspring of Childhood Cancer Survivors Have No Increased Risk for Birth Defects

A large, retrospective study of the children of childhood cancer survivors who were treated with radiation therapy and/or some forms of chemotherapy found that the offspring do not have an increased risk for birth defects compared to children of cancer survivors who did not receive such treatments.

The findings provide reassurance that increased risks of birth defects are unlikely for the children of childhood cancers survivors and can help guide family planning choices for those survivors.

The study was published online today in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

“We hope this study will become part of the arsenal of information used by the physicians of childhood cancer survivors if reproductive worries arise,” said lead author Lisa Signorello, Sc.D., associate professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and senior epidemiologist at the International Epidemiology Institute in Rockville, Md. “Childhood cancer survivors face real reproductive concerns, including unknowns related to the effects of therapy. But, hopefully this study will provide some reassurance that their children are unlikely to be at increased risk for genetic defects stemming from their earlier treatment.”

Childhood cancer patients frequently receive aggressive, life-saving radiation and chemotherapy treatments that can affect their ability to have children. For girls, radiation to the pelvis – and the resulting damage to the uterus – has been associated with a risk for miscarriage and preterm birth, and effects on the ovaries can lead to infertility.

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy with alkylating agents can damage DNA. Previous studies have not determined whether genetic damage from a parent’s treatment could be passed down to their offspring. Genetic-based birth defects are rare in the general population (about 3 percent), and while previous research indicated little or no increased risk for birth defects among the offspring, the studies were relatively small in size and lacked detailed information about radiation and chemotherapy treatments, such as specific radiation doses to the testes and ovaries.

In the current study, investigators used information from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, a large retrospective study of treatment and outcomes in more than 20,000 childhood cancer survivors diagnosed between 1970 and 1986. Signorello and her colleagues examined data from 4,699 children of 1,128 men and 1,627 women who were five-year childhood cancer survivors. The survivors reported their children’s health problems through questionnaires, and investigators also examined medical records, focusing on survivors’ history of radiation to the testes or ovaries and chemotherapy with alkylating agents.

Of the survivors, 63 percent (1,736) had received radiation for their cancer as children, and 44 percent of men (496) and 50 percent of women (810) had received chemotherapy with alkylating agents. Overall, 2.7 percent (129) of the survivors’ children had at least one birth defect, such as Down syndrome, abnormally short stature (achondroplasia) or cleft lip. Researchers found that 3 percent of children of mothers exposed to radiation or treated with alkylating chemotherapy agents had a genetic birth defect, compared to 3.5 percent of children of cancer survivors who did not have such exposures.

Only 1.9 percent of children of male cancer survivors who received these DNA-damaging treatments were reported to have such birth defects, compared to 1.7 percent of children of male survivors who did not have this type of chemotherapy or radiation. The researchers concluded that children of cancer survivors were not at higher risk for birth defects stemming from parents’ exposure to chemotherapy and/or radiation.

The researchers noted that a strength of their study is the comparison they made to the children of other cancer survivors and not to the children of people randomly sampled from the general population. Signorello said that comparing cancer survivors to individuals in the general population can be difficult because the latter may not be as thorough in reporting health problems of their children, and the children of cancer survivors may be under heightened clinical surveillance and may appear to have higher rates of birth defects as a result. The investigators determined that the prevalence of birth defects among the cancer survivors’ children was similar to what has been reported in the general population.

“The possibility of birth defects in offspring has been a lingering concern among cancer survivors because it’s hard to address,” Signorello said. “It took years to validate the parents’ self-reported outcomes, and to assemble and use the medical records of radiation and chemotherapy treatment exposures to allow us to quantify their exposure doses. These are the strongest results to date, adding greater certainty to other studies examining this common concern among survivors of childhood cancer.”

The researchers would like to continue to sequence the DNA of families of childhood cancer survivors (survivors and their children) to see if there is any evidence of radiation- or chemical-induced genetic damage, even if the children did not have birth defects. They would also like to combine data from all U.S. and international studies on this topic in order to provide even larger, more definitive results.
