Heritage Ball Taking Off

The chairs of the 2010 Heritage Ball have assembled a dream team of New York designers, local artists and celebrity florists to execute their vision around the theme of “Up, Up and Away!” As the pieces come together, the Ball is shaping up to be one of the most dramatic and spectacular ever.

Serving as the chairs are Anita Hogin and Hugh Howser of H Three Events, who have been the creative minds behind some of middle Tennessee’s most talked-about events. They’ve engaged New York designer Vadie Turner and artist Ken Warrington in conceptualizing the visual elements. And now they’ve brought in Branches – the florists who turned heads at Carrie Underwood’s wedding – to craft the centerpieces that are sure to grab attention at Franklin’s longest-running black tie event on Oct. 2.

“The centerpieces will certainly support the theme, and patrons will notice different versions that draw the eye toward the stage in dramatic fashion,” said Howser. “These arrangements are breathtaking, and we can’t wait to unveil them!”

One version includes a kite structure that will flutter in the breeze, high above 30 tables. Think blue hydrangeas, coral accents, and calla lilies that create a sense of floating clouds. Another includes a low, sunken pearl lily arrangement that features suspended candles and an intoxicating scent. Linens of antique gold, cream and coral will transition from the cocktail tent, through the dining area and toward the stage and dance floor. Giant arrangements echoing the flight theme will anchor the spaces.

“Floral sets the stage at any gala,” Howser said. “We’re pulling out all the stops, and Branches is the best of the best at creating a magnificent ambience.”

Heritage Ball Flying High

“Our theme this year is Up, Up and Away, and we’re taking this gala to the skies in more ways than one,” says Howser. “The cocktail tent, which we’re dubbing Feathered Friends Lounge, will showcase 420 birds flying through the air created by Ken Warrington.

“Ken is a genius at taking grandiose ideas and making them a reality,” says Howser, who along with Hogin, owns H Three Events, a renowned event planning company based in Brentwood. Both are chairing the ball on a volunteer basis.

Warrington, a Grassland resident, is formally trained as an architect. His graphic artist firm, Impatto, serves as a creative support team for planners like Howser and Hogin who strive to bring a “Wow” factor to their events.

“These birds at the ball will be spectacular,” says Warrington who is creating each one by hand. “They’ll be suspended in flight patterns from the top of the cocktail tent. Warrington says lighting and shadows at the ball will give interesting movement to his flocks.

Howser insists this year’s ball will soar to new heights with its artful elements. “We’re combining Big Apple glitz and glamour with the down home gracious hospitality for which the Heritage Ball has long been known,” he said.

The Atlanta All-Stars To Headline Heritage Ball

Patrons attending the 37th Annual Heritage Ball at the Eastern Flank Battlefield Park on October 2 will be dancing to hit after hit from the Atlanta All-Stars, one of the best party bands in the South.

“The Atlanta All-Stars are out of this world,” said Anita Hogin of H Three Events, who is co-chairing the Ball with her business partner, Hugh Howser. “Every one of them is super talented, and their horn section is simply amazing. This band will have the Heritage Ball rocking well into the night!”

Led by singer Darren Leslie, who has performed with legends like Kool & The Gang and The Temptations, the All-Stars are backed up by two phenomenal female vocalists and a band that includes a four-piece rhythm section, two trumpets, two saxophones, and a trombone. The play list ranges from The Beatles to ZZ Top, Otis Redding to The Rolling Stones… this will be one you won’t want to miss! The Heritage Ball marks the first appearance of The Atlanta All-Stars in Middle Tennessee.

And with H Three Events organizing the Ball, you can expect the evening to be taken to a new level of professional party planning. Hogin and Howser’s client list is a who’s who in Middle Tennessee, and their parties have been featured in People magazine.

“This pair of event professionals will produce a spectacular Ball,” said Heritage Foundation Executive Director Mary Pearce. “Our 37th annual black-tie gala will be one for the history books.”

Atlanta Bread Co. Closed

Atlanta Bread Company in Cool Springs

Atlanta Bread Company in Cool Springs

Atlanta Bread Company in Cool Springs has closed their doors.  The Cool Springs restaurant was located at 535 Cool Springs Blvd, Franklin TN 37067.

No public notice was given prior to closing.  It is unknown if Brookside Properties has another restaurant or retail tenant to fill the space vacated by Atlanta Bread Company.

We tried to reach someone at the corporate office of Atlanta Bread Company, unfortunately there was no answer at customer service and the voice mail box was full, unable to accept messages.

Not wasting any time, McLemore Auction Company, LLC is holding an online auction of all store contents including restaurant equipment and furniture.  The sale includes refrigerators, grills, computers, prep tables, hundreds of baking pans and more.  The auction started today and goes until September 28, 2010 at 2:00pm.

Ever since Panera opened in Cool Springs, we had a hunch it would be a rough road for Atlanta Bread Company although the closing came as a surprise.

Firemen’s Memorial Stair Climb

Franklin firefighters training for memorial stair climb

You may have noticed Franklin Firefighters climbing up and down the stairs of the 2nd Avenue and 4th Avenue parking garages this summer. They’ve been preparing for the inaugural Nashville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb this Saturday, September 11 at The Pinnacle at Symphony Place building.

More than 20 Franklin Firefighters are part of a group of 343 firefighters from across the country who will participate in the event. Wearing 70 pounds of gear, they will climb 110 stories in memory of the 343 New York City firefighters who died in the twin towers on September 11, 2001. Each participant will climb in honor of a firefighter who perished, wearing a badge with the name and photograph of that individual.

“We started training for this event before registration opened,” said Franklin Fire Captain Tom Chaffin, who explained that the event is a fundraiser for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. He said, “As soon as we heard about it we knew we wanted to participate.”

Chaffin said that he and his crew from Fire Station 1 have climbed 40-90 flights of stairs two to three days each week since May, and they’ve climbed 110 flights of steps at least once. “We’re all looking forward to it,” said Chaffin.

The mission of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and coworkers. For more information please visit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation website.

Bald Moms for Childhood Cancer

46 Mommas to shave heads in support of childhood cancer research

46 Mommas to shave heads in support of childhood cancer research

Dozens of moms whose children have been touched by cancer will be shaving their heads and appearing on a television special to support childhood cancer research. The “46 Mommas”, including women from the Nashville area, will participate in the shaving event September 7, 6 p.m., at the Center Court of the Hollywood and Highland Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The 46 Mommas will then appear onstage during the Stand Up To Cancer live telecast, September 10, 7 p.m. Stand Up To Cancer will be broadcast live on all of the major television networks and several cable outlets.

Tiffany Beamer of Bellevue is the driving force behind the newly-formed 46 Mommas childhood cancer organization. The group adopted the name 46 Mommas because 46 children are diagnosed with cancer every day.

Beamer’s daughter, Miranda, was just three years old when doctors at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt diagnosed the youngster with cancer.

“My family was out of town in September 2007 when we noticed a lump on our youngest daughter Miranda’s back,” said Beamer. “After we returned home to Nashville, doctors at Vanderbilt told us Miranda had Ewing’s Sarcoma of the soft tissue of the chest wall.”

The toddler spent months at Children’s Hospital and went through six rounds of chemotherapy before undergoing surgery to remove the tumor.

More rounds of chemotherapy followed before Miranda was finally pronounced cancer-free. She spent the next 15 months in physical therapy to treat nerve damage in her legs that was a side effect of chemotherapy.

Today, the leg braces are gone and Miranda is doing well. Tiffany, who has three other children, said her family’s experience made her determined to do something for other families.

“I wanted to make a difference for the parents who lost their children to cancer. As a mother I decided to shave my head to show my daughter and the rest of the world that kids get cancer, too,” said Tiffany. “I went online to recruit other “mommas” to support childhood cancer research.”

One of the “mommas” who answered the call was Becky Evreniadis of Nashville. Her son, Jamie, was three years old when the active little boy complained about pain in his legs. Local physicians couldn’t find a cause so Becky and her husband took Jamie to Children’s Hospital where doctors diagnosed their son with neuroblastoma, a form of cancer that starts in early nerve cells of the sympathetic nervous system.

“Neuroblastoma was such a scary word. It was even worse when they told us that the survival rate is less than 25 percent,” said Evreniadis.

Jamie, who had tumors in his stomach and leg, went through several rounds of aggressive treatments with setbacks and side effects. He finally appeared to be stabilizing when he developed breathing problems and passed away April 24, 2006.

Evreniadis decided to join the “46 Mommas” in memory of Jamie and “all the children fighting today and the ones who will be diagnosed tomorrow.”

She is apprehensive about losing her hair and appearing on national TV but she hopes the Shave for the Brave will shine a spotlight on childhood cancer.

“I will do whatever is in my power to bring attention to these children,” said Evreniadis.

Money raised during the 46 Mommas Shave for the Brave will be used to support cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, one of the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising programs for childhood cancer research.
