WCS Sets Up Centennial to Fail?

Williamson County Schools rezoning

Williamson County Schools rezoning

A heated debate affecting the Cool Springs area over a Williamson County School rezoning continues with a vote set for tomorrow evening at 5pm.

The majority of parents we’ve spoken with in the Cool Springs area, still feel a lack of transparency on behalf of the Williamson County School Board and the new Superintendent of school Dr. Mike Looney in regards to the rezoning.

The following letter was submitted by a concerned Williamson County parent who has requested anonymity:

“In November of last year, the Williamson County School (WCS) administration proposed a rezoning plan that moved a small number of students out of the Kenrose-Woodland-Ravenwood feeder system into Centennial High School (CHS) with a majority of kids they don’t know. After extensive public outcry questioning why this group of kids, why it was proposed on the last day of Interim Schools Director Dr. David Heath’s tenure, and why a wider zoning plan wasn’t considered, the school board rejected the plan.

After spending more than $80,000 of tax payer money on an Educational Logistics, Inc. (Edulog) software package, the WCS administration appears to be back at it again. However, now they have implemented a third party software package to develop the same plan rejected last year. Why? And why haven’t they published what the inputs were to the program? Was this rigged from the beginning to give the answer they wanted, and if so, again, why? Is the Williamson County plan setting up Centennial for failure? The evidence seems compelling:

- Though CHS was designed, funded, and built as an 1800 student high school, in recent years, it has been operating with less than 1400 students
- Last year’s WCS Administration rezoning plan and both rezoning plans (Edulog’s and WCS Administration’s) this year assume capacity at CHS of 1600 students. This week the administration counted the school classrooms and lockers, and measured the cafeteria to verify that in fact, Centennial should have 1800 students.
- After building Ravenwood High School, the exodus of students from Centennial resulted in a concentrated population of minorities and financially disadvantaged kids at the school (30.3% minorities and 25.2% economically disadvantaged per TDOE 2009 Report card) with a relative lack of minority and economically disadvantaged representation at the other northern county high schools (less than half the percentages at Ravenwood High School, Brentwood High School, and Franklin High School).
- Other high schools in the county (Page and Fairview) both have smaller enrollments than Centennial, yet have higher test scores; so, clearly a small school can succeed, but not one that has become an economically disadvantaged “dumping ground”
- The plan in November of last year, the original Edulog plan last week, and Dr. Looney’s current plan all have Ravenwood minority and economically disadvantaged representation decreasing, and Centennial minority representation increasing. Is this progress?

Is this a plan for capacity utilization?  What inputs were used to get this plan?  We don’t have all the answers, but in light of this new evidence, parents and tax payers are wondering how the board can vote yes for a rezoning plan this Friday, and why the board can’t use their eighty thousand dollar investment to start from scratch with published goals and the relative weights of proximity, capacity, and broken feeder system BEFORE determining a plan. This appears to be the best way to ensure a fair and objective plan.”

We’re very interested to see how things play out tomorrow evening with the Williamson County School Board and Dr. Mike Looney.

It seems there are still many questions left answered about the rezoning, although a vote is scheduled for 5pm.

The Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program is looking for dozens of pregnant women in Cool Springs or Nashville to participate in research on the use of flu vaccine. The study will evaluate the immune responses to the influenza vaccine in both mother and infant. Vanderbilt is one of several sites in this National Institutes of Health study which will last through the 2010-11 flu season.

While the flu shot has been found to be safe and is universally recommended for all pregnant women, many do not receive influenza vaccine. Only a few studies have shown how effective the flu vaccine may be in preventing influenza in the infant.

Influenza is a serious respiratory virus. Hospitalization and death rates from influenza are greater in high-risk populations, including pregnant women and young infants. However, lingering public concerns about safety, and a lack of evidence of transference of protection from mothers to unborn babies, are questions that need to be addressed.

Experts at the VVRP are enrolling 36 pregnant women. A total of 180 pregnant women will be enrolled at multiple sites across the country for a period of five to eight months. Women, 18 to 39 years, who are in their second or third trimester of pregnancy (14 to 33 weeks gestation) are eligible to take part in the study. Each woman will receive the seasonal flu vaccine, and have their blood drawn four times over a six-month period.

The study will be conducted at the Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks location, in the Center for Women’s Health. For more information on this study, and how to participate, please call the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program at (615) 322-2730, or e-mail: vaccineresearch@vanderbilt.edu.

Starbucks Evacuated

Starbucks customers evacuating due to gas leak

The Starbucks in Cool Springs at 555 Cool Springs Blvd. was evacuated around 7:00 am this morning due to a gas leak.

Customers were suddenly asked to leave the store while Starbucks employees evacuated everyone inside, as well as outside on the patio.

A Starbucks employee was seen standing at the drive-thru telling customers the store is closed until the gas leak is resolved.

We were unable to determine when this Starbucks location will re open, although we’re confident Starbucks and the Franklin Fire Dept will have it resolved shortly.

Fortunately there are several other Starbucks nearby:

Nike Store in Cool Springs

Nike Store opens Cool Springs, TN

Nike Store opens Cool Springs, TN

Cool Springs has gained yet another retailer leaving Opry Mills, the Nike Store, now that it will be at least a year until they reopen.

The Nike Store has moved into the Cool Springs Pointe development where Best Buy, Golf Galaxy, Dollar Tree, Ross Dress For Less, Old Navy, Mattress King, DSW Shoes and GameStop are located.

Many retail tenants from Opry Mills have relocated to Lebanon’s Premium Outlets.  Just a few weeks ago Simon Property Group, the parent company to Opry Mills, acquired Premium Outlets in Lebanon and changed the name to Prime Outlets.  The move will no doubt help “stop the bleeding” and allow better overall control of the Opry Mills tenants, rather than losing them to competing local outlet malls.

Nike has said while the move is only temporary, while repairs are underway at the flood damages Opry Mills mall.  They have stated they plan on moving back to Opry Mills outlet mall at Opryland when it reopens.

Local sources we spoke with said that while a only short term was signed, Nike is most likely going to “see how it goes” in the area adjacent to the Cool Springs Galleria before racing back to Opry Mills if and when it ever opens.

Rear Window at Chaffin’s

Rear Window at Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre

One of the most entertaining nights in theatre, “Rear Widow,” is now playing at Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre outside Cool Springs and just one mile from the Loveless Café off Highway 100 in Nashville, through Saturday, October 9.

The hilarious comedy-noir was created by notable playwrights Dietz Osborne and Nate Eppler as an homage to the dark film noir movies “Double Indemnity,” “Sunset Boulevard” and “Maltese Falcon” but with a hilarious Osborne & Eppler comedy twist.

Taking the classic whodunnit detective tale, the team weaves and winds its way through intrigue and romance making full-use of the Chaffin’s in-the square stage area. It’s a rich and delightful comedy with splashes of Garrison Keillor’s “Guy Noir” character, which Osborne says he hasn’t had the chance to hear on “Prairie Home Companion,” along with doses of fourth-wall breaking ala “The Office” humor with the attractiveness of the cast of “Castle.” Yep, these actors Martha Wilkinson, Jennifer Richmond, B.J. Rowell and Osborne & Eppler are a good-looking bunch to spend the evening with and crazy funny to boot.

“She was like whisky ice cream….I wasn’t sold on the whole package but I sure like the flavors on their own,” reflects insurance detective Judd Cain. So many humorous lines, you’ll want to steal them for your next party or at the very least your Facebook status.

Grab your parents or your teens for a family night of fun. It really is exhilarating walking out the door after being thoroughly entertained by the Nashville areas hottest new playwrights. More info and reservations, 615-646-9977 or visit www.dinnertheatre.com.
