TN Targets Infant Mortality

A unique, wide-ranging group of national and state leaders will meet next week to find ways to reduce the alarming number of newborns dying in Tennessee.

The challenges facing Tennessee’s mothers and infants are sobering. The state ranks 45th in the nation for prematurity and again received an “F” on the March of Dimes annual report card, with a preterm birth rate of  1 in 7 infants, a 17% increase from 1996 to 2006, and the state’s infant mortality rate is nearly a third higher than the national average.

The Tennessee Initiative for Perinatal Quality Care (TIPQC) is bringing together physicians, nurses, hospital administrators, insurance companies, families, legislators and community groups March 3-4 at the Cool Springs Marriott in Franklin. The progress of ongoing infant mortality initiatives will be discussed, and new statewide projects will be chosen.

In addition, a Tennessee family, the Nelsons, will offer compelling firsthand accounts of the difficulty of premature births and lengthy stays in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The conference begins at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3. Sessions will focus on information from statewide NICUs, with topics such as a NICU Temperature Project report and NICU safety.

On Wednesday night, a gubernatorial forum from 7-9 p.m. includes bipartisan participation of candidates running for governor of Tennessee. This forum is open to the public and will be held in the Salon 5 Ballroom at the Marriott Cool Springs, 700 Cool Springs Boulevard in Franklin. Candidates will be given an opportunity to speak to the healthcare community, answer pre-submitted questions and, if time allows, take questions from the floor.

The program continues at the Cool Springs Marriott on Thursday, March 4, from 8:15 a.m.-5 p.m., with various sessions on late- and pre-term birth. From noon-1:30 p.m., TIPQC will host a legislative forum in which Tennessee lawmakers will discuss health-care policy and the role of the Legislature in promoting improvements in  infant and maternal health. Those scheduled to appear include state senators Rusty Crowe, Randy McNally, Doug Henry, and Diane Black; and state representatives Brenda Gilmore, Mike Stewart , Beth Harwell and Debra Maggart.

“We’re particularly excited to have the candidates and legislative leaders join us at this year’s meeting.  We need their perspectives and insights on government’s roles in healthcare if we are going to improve the results our system delivers,” said Dr. Peter Grubb, the Medical Director of TIPQC.

Media crews are welcome to attend any events. Please contact Brenda Barker, TIPQC Project Manager, at 615-775-4751.

The Tennessee Initiative for Perinatal Quality Care, funded by a grant from the Governor’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination, launched in October 2008. Its goal is to engage providers across the perinatal spectrum in statewide, evidence-based and data-driven quality improvement projects.

The Kids Art Auction

Popular Chair-ish The Kids Art Auction Moves To Loveless Barn

Kids throughout Middle Tennessee get a helping hand when the arts community brings out their coolest “chair” themed works as well as stunning artwork from invitational artists for the popular Chair-ish The Kids Art Auction benefiting Kids On The Block set for Thursday, March 25 at the Loveless Cafe Barn in Nashville off Highway 100.

The premier event, in its fourteenth year, helps the non-profit Kids On The Block organization serve close to 40,000 kids throughout Middle Tennessee promoting understanding and acceptance while helping kids deal with bullying, child abuse, prejudice, divorce and other health and social concerns impacting their lives.

Andee Rudloff, Frist Center for the Visual Arts’ community relations manager, said the Chair-ish The Kids Art Auction has been embraced by artists trying to make a difference in kids lives.

“Guests attending the event have the opportunity to purchase incredible works of art while supporting a worthy cause. I am so proud of our artists who are uniting to help teach tolerance and acceptance while promoting a healthy community through this event. In an ideal world, no child would suffer and charitable instincts and education would prevail with global acceptance of all different types of people. Our community is so lucky to have Kids On The Block to help make our world a better place,” Rudloff said.

Event co-chairs Betsy Cunagin and Birgitta Williamson said the art extravaganza features a live auction of work by impressive invitational and award-winning artisans including “Lost Boys” photographer Jack Spencer, concrete artist Sherri Warner Hunter, media dimensional artist Don Evans, photographer Stacey Irvin and crayon sculptor Herb Williams as well as a silent auction with a unique collection of chair-themed art, trips, sports experience items, jewelry, art lessons and more.

“From sitting in the co-host chair for 104.5 The Zone sports show with George Plaster and Willy Daunic to whimsical children’s Adirondack chairs, the event’s live and silent auctions have imaginative ‘chair’ themed creations. The Adirondack chairs are part of a series of artful objects painted by local artists including wooden tree swings and adorable step stools which are perfect for little ones. With the Loveless Barn as the backdrop, it is a laid-back, fun cocktail party for a worthy cause,” Cunagin said.

Williamson said a preview of the auction pieces for the Loveless Cafe Barn can be found on-line at STARS (Students Taking A Right Stand) Nashville’s Facebook page.  Kids On The Block is an incredible arm of this non-profit organization founded in 1981 with the help and guidance of former Ambassador Joe M. Rodgers. (www.starsnashville.org/kidsontheblock)

“A highlight of the evening is watching the Kids On The Block puppet performance. It’s a great mix of imagination and education and the night generates much-needed funds to allow the program to reach and impact students’ lives throughout the area,” Williamson said.

Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased at 615-983-6805, edaunic@starsnashville.org or visit www.starsnashville.org for more info.

Founded in 1984, STARS is a national leader in school-based student assistance programs whose specialists work throughout nine Middle Tennessee counties helping students and families tackle tough social issues like cyber bullying, peer pressure, substance abuse and violence helping remove these barriers to learning. STARS’ Kids on the Block program uses life-sized Japanese Bunraku-style puppets and other interactive teaching methods to educate children and the broader community about health and social concerns affecting their lives.

Invitational artists participating in the Kids Art Auction at the Loveless Cafe Barn are Jack Spencer, Sherri, Warner Hunter, Don Evans, Stacey Irvin and Herb Williams.

Valentine’s Day Movie Review

Valentine’s Day: A Crazy Collision of Movie Star Worlds

Review By:  Nancy McNulty, (A Self-Ordained, Non-voting, Member of the Academy)

He brought you “Beaches,” “Pretty Woman” and “The Princess Dairies” so what’s not to love about writer/director/actor Garry Marshall and his celebrity wrapped package “Valentine’s Day?” Still showing around the city including 12 times today at Thoroughbred 20, if you shied away from this all-star movie on the big V-Day, you might now consider it a welcome relief from Oscar front-runners, “The Hurt Locker” and “Avatar.”  Marshall delivers once again a delightful, sappy, romantic comedy.  With over 20 notable names making an appearance, including Marshall himself, you wonder how he could possibly weave a coherent story-line.  Obviously, if the stars, from Patrick Dempsey and Queen Latifah to Ashton Kutcher and the Taylors (Lautner and Swift) weren’t so well-known, you would definitely get lost as Marshall works the well-worn plot, can you really find true love by mid-night on Valentine’s Day.  Hailed as a Valentine’s Day Massacre by too many critics to count, what’s the point of a romantic comedy?  Good entertainment for two hours, if you’re lucky.  The movie does feel a little bit Sesame Street, ADD, in its jumpy plot development, but it was just good movie fun seeing all of these big names on the screen in a crazy collision of movie star worlds. You have to give Marshall credit for taking some of actors out of their clique roles but you’ll have to judge for yourself if Julia Roberts is credible as a soldier and Anne Hathaway believable as a phone sex operator. Keep on the look out for Marshall’s Hitchcock cameo.  One of my favorite moments takes place during an outdoor movie in a cemetery where the big screen has an old Shirley MacLaine movie playing as she makes her diva, in-person entrance.  (Movie trivia: The old flick playing is “Hot Spell.”) Very fun.  Hats off to Marshall, HBO’s “Making Of” and the movie’s press machine for not ruining one of the funniest twists.  Is it a good ride? Yep. Will you owe your husband/boyfriend a bloody war movie?  Most likely, so you might want to grab three cute girlfriends for a matinee like I did. It’ll make you smile.

Valentine’s Day is now playing at the Carmike Thoroughbred 20, the preferred movie theater in Franklin or Brentwood.  The movie theater is located near the Cool Springs Galleria, between Cool Springs Blvd and Mallory Ln.

Five Guys Burgers Opening?

We reported back in October that Five Guys Burgers was opening in Cool Springs.  Some may have missed it, for others this serves as an update on the Cool Springs restaurants.

The former Ming’s Chinese Buffet, in a retail center with FedEx Office and Papa John’s, was split in half to accommodate Five Guys Burgers coming in to the area.  Five Guys is taking the end-cap space, about three thousand square feet.

Ming’s Chinese Buffet will reopen as a smaller restaurant called Peking Palace, probably without the buffet.

Everyone in Cool Springs was very excited to hear we had a great place opening to have a fat cheeseburger.  Five Guys Burgers is known for nice fat cheeseburgers for those not familiar.

Four months later and the retail space has been subdivided but no interior build out has started.

We’re looking forward to these new restaurants in Cool Springs, but things are not moving very fast over there for Five Guys Burgers or Peking Palace.

The Gardner School Opening

Cool Springs Gardner School

The Gardner School is opening a location in Cool Springs, scheduled to be up and running Summer or Fall 2010.

The school is an academically focused preschool with educational programs for children ages six weeks to five years old.  We hear The Gardner School costs around $12,000 a year plus uniforms, registration fees and semi-annual fundraisers.

There are currently two other Gardner School locations, in Brentwood and Nashville.  The Cool Springs Franklin location will be the third in Nashville.

This new location will be at 131 Market Exchange Court, close to the intersection of Carothers Blvd and Baker Bridge Ave.  The Cool Springs Gardner School borders Alexander Automotive Campus and across the street from Prairie Life Fitness.

The contractor for the project is Advantage Builders, Inc., headquartered on Autumn Springs Court in Franklin TN.

Construction financing for The Cool Springs Gardner School space is being provided by the Bancorp South Franklin office.

Disney Store at Mall Closes

Disney Store at Cool Springs Mall Closes

The last Disney Store in the Nashville area, located at the Cool Springs Galleria has closed.

Mall officials had been in talks with The Disney Store in hopes of keeping their retail tenant over the last few months.

The Disney Store  ultimately decided not to renew their lease in an effort to regain strength in the remaining brick and mortar Disney Stores, while building and growing Disney’s online ecommerce presence.

There are two remaining Disney Stores in Tennessee, in Memphis and Knoxville.  Calls to both the Memphis store at Wolfchase Galleria and Knoxville store at West Town Mall went unanswered.

The former Disney Store space in the Cool Springs Galleria will be gutted and reconfigured to make room for new retail tenants on the way.

One new retail tenant coming to the mall in Cool Springs is “Francesca’s Collections”, a womens store offering accessories, jewelry and apparel.

Francesco’s Collections currently has locations at The Streets of Indian Lake in Hendersonville, H.G. Hill Center in Green Hills Nashville and The Avenue in Murfreesboro.

Trouble abounds and hilarity ensues when the world premier of “Southern Fried Funeral” hits the stage March 12-20 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Franklin ’s Grassland community off Hillsboro Road  near Cool Springs.

Celebrating its 13th year of exceptional family entertainment, the Bethlehem Players are staging their first world premier comedy written by noted playwrights Dietz Osborne and Nate Eppler according to BUMC Music and Arts Director Harry Robinson.

“Osborne and Eppler have developed a reputation of creating fresh comedies which are wildly popular with audiences at Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre.  We are thrilled that after a decade of presenting annual productions to packed audience of our own, the Bethlehem Players are branching out and taking on this hilarious new play ‘Southern Fried Funeral’ which pays homage to popular stories like ‘Steel Magnolias’ and ‘Fried Green Tomatoes,’” Robinson said.

Osborne says the comedic journey follows the Frye family “after the beloved patriarch dies leaving mamma with a broken down family and a house she loves and is about to lose.  There’s tell that Dewey just maybe won last week’s big jackpot. Before you know it, family and neighbors are coming out of the woodwork to pay their respects and claim their share of the prize. “

“Rich, southern comedies are a favorite genre for my writing partner, Nate Eppler, and myself after having appeared in plays like ‘Dearly Beloved’ and ‘Christmas Belles.’ The story of ‘Southern Fried Funeral’ reflects universal experiences and funerals and weddings bring out the best, the worst and the funniest in people.  I think audiences will really relate and enjoy taking a moment out of their busy lives for a laugh,” Osborne said.

Opening night for the world premier on March 12 includes the opportunity for a Patrons Party immediately following the play at $25.00 per person which includes a ticket to the play and the party at a Bethlehem Players’ patron’s home with the full cast and playwrights.
